After 11 years of immense Firefly parties at the Marcus Garvey Ballroom, as well as amazing parties across England and Europe, our Garvey nights are coming to end on the 11TH of JUNE. That’s right, this will be the last time The Firefly Show comes to the Garvey! It’s been 11 fantastic years from the early days of Garvey experiments, the storming parties at The Bomb, our intimate events where we re-arranged Stealth, and a UK tour taking in Bristol, Leeds and London. We’ve been further afield too, hosting parties in ski resorts and a festival in a forest in Hungary. We’ve featured pretty much every major act we could have ever hoped to have worked with and it’s been a blast at every step of the way. But now it’s time for the final fling, the biggest party of all. Come join us and help celebrate in style. Come and have it large, Garvey style, one last time!
Firefly 22 Jan 2011 Jesper Dahlbäck & Ivan Smagghe [European Winter Special]
As we roll into the 11th year in January we bring together a huge lineup featuring two massive names; Jesper Dahlbäck Jesper Dahlback is one of Sweden’s leading DJ/producers with a lengthy back catalogue to his name. Recent productions include collaborations with Alexi Delano, Jori Hulkkonen, Tiga, Adam Beyer as well as remixes for the likes of Rex the Dog, Zoo Brazil, Arnaud Rebotini of Black Strobe, Thomas P Heckman, Pan Pot, Len Faki. Production also ranges into Tiga remixes of Depeche Mode, The Prodigy and LCD Soundsytem as well as remixes of Robyn and The Knife together with his cousin John. Jesper has music in his genes – his grandfather, father and uncle are all musicians as are most of his cousins – but it was the musical movements in Detroit, Berlin and London that inspired him to start producing techno, back in 1991 in his bedroom studio. Completely hooked, by 1993 he’d formed the Stockholm-based Globe Studios together with Peter Benisch and Adam Beyer following a chance meeting on the train to Love Parade. In 1996 Jesper started the imprint, Blank, mainly for his own material, and simultaneously launched joint venture DK with Thomas Krome - one of the first labels in Sweden with a techno house crossover approach and the home of producers Alexi Delano, John Sealway, Jori Hulkkonen and DJ Sneak, to name a few. In addition to making music for various techno labels around the world and working with Planet Rhythm, Jesper met up with Swiss-born Stephan Grieder who had just started the Svek label. The duo started to experiment with different sounds, drawing on house music’s roots, utilising vocals and acoustic instruments. Jesper now describes his sound as “ranging between the analogue sounds of the roland sh101 and the precision mathematics of my computer. I’m a researcher and developer of unheard sounds! Since the founding of Globe Studios, I have always been looking for new ways to bend the rules and test the unknown. When I DJ, I just play my own productions blending old classics with new unreleased demos.” A producer first and foremost, Jesper‘s DJ dates find him weaving a soundscape of his productions, remixes and collaborations with new material at every gig, as well as musical elements and sounds worked through the set. “The most exciting element is that there’s no genre boundaries in the music I make today. I like exploring different territories in sounds and breaking new ground. Sometimes I work only with my synthesizers, sometimes on collaborations with other people playing instruments or on vocals. Jesper is now also running his new label called International Sound Laboratory or just ISL. The label is part of the new movements bringing techno and music production in to the new century. So far artists like Alexi Delano, Tony Rohr, Cari Lekebusch, Jori Hulkkonen and Jesper himself has produced material for the label. The imprint works as a experimental platform for the new era in techno music. More info.... Ivan Smagghe Ivan Smagghe belongs to a top table of DJs that journalists like to lazily describe as “The DJ’s DJs”. Along with the likes of occasional partner-in-crime Andrew Weatherall, Ivan has the ability to play music like a raw conduit between his famously obscure records and the dancefloor’s strobe-soaked bodies, injecting something of himself seamlessly into the mix along the way. Some would say it was always going to be like this. The son of fanatical record collectors, music filled his days and dreams throughout childhood. In adulthood his infamous tenure at the Parisian Rough Trade record store was an initiation into a burgeoning French music scene that would in turn pay for his constantly escalating record habit. When the legendary Radio Nova called upon Ivan to broadcast four days a week for four hours a day, the Smagghe world view was finally unleashed on an unsuspecting public- a viscous concoction of post industrial psychadelia and dark post punk electronics, served raw. Almost simultaneously, word started to spread about his irreverent, genre-defying DJ sets: British music journalists reported to the world their quasi-religious experiences at his PULP night in Paris. Soon the virus spread further afield, his bewilderingly different and highly influential DJ comps invaded open minds around the world and sketched a blueprint for what the post-millennium DJ could sound like. If there’s one thing that Ivan Smagghe has personified throughout his residencies at Bugged Out, Fabric, Mondo or Robert Johnson (and a fututre new London party in collaboration with Nathan Wilkins), – it’s vision. His is a vision of darkly resonant sonics, antihero’s anthems and basement-shaking hypnosis. At the end of the day though, beyond his maverick reputation and constant lust for the new, stands only his father’s son. The son who’s infectious and honest love of music, ALL music, is worn plainly on his sleeve. His genre defying/defining production work originally in Black Strobe and now in It’s A Fine Line has connected him to and garnered the praise of (amongst others) James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo and the aforementioned Weatherall. All fellow crusaders in the fight to prove that electronic music can be so much more than a one dimensional soundtrack for a night on the lash.2011 looks to be yet another year of growth for Ivan. The success of his musical blog ‘a few things from Ivan Smagghe’ has generated a compilation series of edits for Paris uber-fashion store Colette. The first volume sold out in a couple of weeks and the second is planned for early next year. His project with Tim Paris, It’s A Fine Line, has already put out numerous remixes (from Superpitcher to the XX) and releases that can’t be pigeonholed (electro rockabilly on Kompakt to italo rickety disco on Marketing). Their new studio is now fully set. Expect a lot more from them, including the production of Battant’s second LP, As I Ride with No Horse. Aside from his A&R role for now 10 years old label Kill The DJ (who will release the first EP of RMVN, Ivan’s project with Roman Flugel), Ivan has also started solo work (a noted remix for parisian label Meant) as well as more planned collaborations with musical friends (Ewan Pearson and Tiga being first on the list). Firefly 10th Birthday Review
Firefly residents Beat Repeaters and David Russell set an apt tone in preparation for the 10th Birthday celebrations…
They played a combination of techno suited to The Garvey and house suited to the first guest of he evening, Motor City Drum Ensemble. As his set began, it became clear that this was going to be an exploration into the depths of electronic music and considering who was yet to play, this was the beautiful eye of the storm… As people continued to arrive, they found their own place in MCDE’s sexy melodies and trademark deep grooves. The long vocal breakdowns and caress of the sounds lead to the crowd reacting emphatically at the slightest drop or bass kicks, which, when they did occur, caused hands to soar from a sea of smiling faces in front of (an also shyly contented) Danilo (MCDE). It was a warming sight in a time where depth in House music is becoming more and more a lost and under appreciated art.
It took several skilled hands to set up Gabriel Ananda’s equipment as MCDE’s set came to an end and the reaction to the new (live) sounds was instantaneous! This German’s performance was distinctly different from that of MCDE – and its through offering these contrasting, yet complementing, genres that Firefly has built a reputation over the past 10 years that is 2nd to none – his techno sound was infused with electronica (á la Doppelwhipper) and caused mayhem on the dance floor as people packed down towards the the front and stripped off layers of clothing. Ananda’s enthusiasm was infectious throughout, and as he prepared to to hand over to the night’s headliner, he allowed himself a moment to take it all in, and informed us that he liked what he saw!
Next up Firefly welcomed Dave Clarke at the helm, to command an already willing and able crowd. And his relentless barrage did just that! He has become an institution because of his ability, at the hardest and fastest paces of Techno, to not weary his audience, but to elate them. As time disappeared, the thumping continued without compromise to people who’d long forgotten their arms were raised to the ceiling, eyes closed with huge grins on their faces, imbibing the closest thing to ‘back-in-the-day’ Techno available these days. The man so closely affiliated with the rise of electronic music delivered at The Garvey, again.
Scarcely can you find the quality of music offered at every Firefly, but it seems the founders 10 years ago had a clear path: include everyone; include all forms of electronic music. The list of previous guests and residents over these years is a testament to that. None more so than Max Cooper and Jeet: the mainstay of every party and the reason people simply don’t leave until the end. To many more years and even more parties…

So anyway its back to business of preparing for the bugs birthday!
As we roll towards the huge Firefly 10th Birthday show in June, We’re very very proud to be able to bring someone to Nottingham who has pretty much pioneered the Manchester derived acid tinged sounds we all know and love. Gerald Simpson as his family know him, or A Guy Called Gerald to the rest of us, started making music in the 1980’s and has been a dance music institution ever since. From his Manchester roots he started the infamous band 808 State, making anthem after anthem which still live on to this day. He has worked with pretty much every artist from Goldie and Krust, to Findlay Quaye and has been credited with the release of the first ever full length Jungle based Drum and Bass album ever in 1995.

It’s the vision of successful producers/djs Paul Maddox and Filthy Rich, who came together through a bond of minimal techno, and a willingness to experiment unmercifully with new sounds. Unsettling any crowd that stands in their way, with their razor-sharp beats and explosive chemistry, their releases and live sets have been menacing dance floors ever since their project was born.
Stacking up an intimidating amount of industry knowledge and skill between them, the Spektre monster is storming from strength to strength, taking no prisoners… Filthy Rich has released countless successful tracks as well as gaining the support of top name DJs, whilst Paul Maddox has been fiercely producing music since the age of 15. Although coming from two very diverse musical backgrounds, their love of minimalism and attraction to cutting edge technology created a lethal combination.
Their sinful sounds draw inspiration from early R&S releases, Joey Beltram, right through to modern masterminds such as M.A.N.D.Y, Plasmik and Trentemoller. They use their combined experiences of minimalism to produce dark sinister sounds mixed in with twisted vocals and unnerving foundations, whilst remaining accessible to the crowds.
Connoisseur of the scene Oliver Huntemann, snatched up Spektre’s early releases for his own label “Dance Electric.” Since then the pair have earnt admiration and support from Sven Vath to Tim Sheridan, Audiojack to Fergie. Championing their sound, tracks such as “A Glimpse Outside” became immediate hits – launched straight onto DJ Mags cover cd. Further successes like “Haze” and “Minimalist Machinist” gained huge popularity in the clubs internationally, played by the likes of Mike Monday and Audiofly while one of Spektres latest offerings “Hover” was thrashed out at Cocoon by the legendary Sven Vath on New Years Eve, sure signs that this pair have indeed arrived.

“Medicine”, is the new single from Cagedbaby aka Tom Gandey. Artist, Producer and International DJ Cagedbaby returns with arguably his best work yet. Since his first album, the sublime “Will See You Now”, Cagedbaby has been constantly destroying Dancefloors the world over as a DJ, gathering a cult following by craftfully delivering his unique style of techno and disco, deploying his own re-edits, remixes and productions from his residencies in Ibiza’s Space Terrace, Pacha and Eden to Womb and Fuji Rock in Japan, from the Big Day Out in Australia to Rock Ness, Creamfields, Glastonbury and Bestival a firm festival favourite.
He’s also been busy in the studio working with diverse artists from Fatboyslim to Radioslave, and Kris Menace to David Byrne – and massively in demand as a remixer including latest remixes for Empire Of The Sun, The Temper Trap, Grace Jones, Armand Van Helden, Sneaky Soundsystem, The BPA and many more.

Gaz Williams, aka Raw Hedroom, is a techno artist hailing from Nottingham, UK but now residing in Berlin. He was immersed in music from a very early age, starting the piano at the age of six and picking up skills in several classical instruments during his childhood. At the age of 12 he discovered the seductive (or barmy to his primary-school classmates) sound of “rave” music and began trying to make electronic music using his computer. An early project involved an Amiga with a sampler and a cheap midi keyboard. Due to lack of a mixer (it took a long time to save up for these things on a paper round!) this “high tech” sound was captured using two battered ghettoblasters and a nearby microphone (possibly “borrowed” from school). So, the world of electronic music, bleeps and buzzes was calling, much to the grief of his music-teacher mother. A 15 year (and counting!) obsession ensued.
Moving to Nottingham in ’99, he met many like minded people and became a familiar face on the club scene, involved in several of the city’s club nights. Indeed it was here that the Max Hedroom project was conceived, with partners in crime Max Cooper (Traum, Autist) and Mr (Mark) Seavers (Pure Filth). Max Hedroom, in its various guises, has seen unforgettable sets alongside artists with styles varying from the sublime electronica of Plaid and Si Begg to the pounding techno of Surgeon – and stopping everywhere in between! The more recent Raw Hedroom project is a solo excursion focusing on light and dark, space and claustrophobia. Raw Hedroom uses cutting edge computer and touchscreen technology to deliver a precisely crafted set. For him, being able to physically “touch” and manipulate sound is key. This allows him to express himself through the machine, rather than simply “controlling” a laptop. A typical set will see fragmented beats nestled against stomach churning bass and searing techno hi hats, always keeping the dancefloor a few degrees above boiling point.
The ability to “touch” sound is as important to Raw Hedroom in the studio as on stage. Rather than careful programming, he would much rather hit record and jam live, capturing the human error and groove that is missing from much electronic music. His sound is innovative, but always in touch with the dancefloor. It’s cold, crisp and clinical yet, paradoxically, warm and organic.
Now based in Berlin the world has become a much smaller place. Work both as a live performer and giving live music and production seminars regularly takes him to far reaching corners of the globe. With some killer tracks on the way on some very well-respected labels this trend is definitely set to continue!

Jeet is a UK DJ, artist, architect, promoter and entrepreneur. His love for techno and drive to become the technically talented act he is today, started in the 90s when he saw Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin. Jeet has built his own style of DJing upon these influences, incorporating 3 deck mixing and layering of sound with new technologies that provide for an exciting and interactive show.
In 2000, Jeet founded the legendary UK club night, Firefly, now in its 10th year. Using his talents as a DJ, Jeet was able to build the night from small beginnings, to becoming a monthly sell out phenomenon having boasted the world’s biggest acts as its guests. Jeet has played along side Derrick May, Alex Under, Jeff Mills, Francois K, Dave Clarke, Adam Freeland, Plump Djs, Digitalism, Justice, Hot Chip, Derrick Carter, Vitalic, Josh Wink, Alter Ego, Green Velvet, Annie Mac, Erol Alkan, etc. Even amongst such esteemed company, Jeet has always impressed, and in the process has earned himself gigs across the UK, France, Hungary and Italy, as well as an appearances on BBC Radio 1 for Annie Nightingale and Fergie.
As well as promoting and managing Firefly, Jeet was promoter of the Bomb in Nottingham, the club which saw the founding of many a big name, with residencies from artists including Sasha, Mr Scruff, Derrick Carter and Tiefschwarz. During his time studying Medicine, then architecture at University, plus running firefly and promoting the Bomb, Jeet also carried out his own residencies as a DJ across the midlands and London. Evidently, Jeet is a hard working man who is passionate about his music and studies, and this comes across in his DJ sets, promotions and architecture. Jeet is currently at the Royal College of Art, London, where he researches into the formal manifestation and experimentation of socially interactive architecture.
Jeet produces under the “cirkus” guise along with Traum and Firefly’s Max Cooper. His production style focuses on experimental and quirky, yet still dancefloor focused sound, which has proven a successful combination with his releases on Firefly recordings having seen consistent chart positions on beatport, and major support from the world’s biggest acts. He takes creative influence from his architectural process and technique, as well as attention to precision from the artwork he creates. The cirkus show consists of a six deck, turntablist meets technology spectacle, which has seen the duo on demand across the UK and abroad. Thrash Jelly is truly an original approach to DJing, being well suited to the pairs 6 hour shows for which they hold residencies in the Midlands and London.

Twin brothers Mark and Richie Thompson have been producing and pushing their own sound for several years, a sound which incorporates and fuses the old traditional percussive instruments of Irelands turbulent and tribal past with the forward thinking element of dance music…Techno.
Not wanting to involve themselves in over-rating hype, the twins have simply kept making and playing music, a philosophy which saw them sign to UK techno jock, Ade Fenton’s Advanced records in 2004. We were Kingz, their debut EP saw massive support from Laurent Garnier, Slam and Rob Da Bank to name a few, and put them on the road to solid acclaim. Subsequent releases doubled in sales and opened the doors for remixes and gigs. In 2006, the twinz signed work to Naked Lunch, Gotham Grooves, Firefly Recordings and Paraell 125.
Their name (pronounced Kell-tech) simply explains what they are all about.techno with a Celtic feel. On the dance floor expect the same quality as they fuse everything from techy progressive to fat tribal, dark percussive to trippy electro, click tech-house to full on party techno cuts. Take M1 Junction 25 towards Nottingham City Centre.
Go straight across every round about / junction for about 5 miles until you pass the QMC on your right.
You will then pass the Rose and Crown on your Left, continue until the main traffic lights on the junction of Lenton Boulevard and Derby Road. From this junction you can see the Savoy Cinema to your right. At this junction take a left, follow for approx 500m where you will find the Marcus Garvey Ballroom on your left. There is a huge free carpark outside the venue.

1st Firefly of the Season Sat October 3rd
After its long summer slumber firefly is about to kick back into action once again. uiui
Firefly has had 9 years of infamy in the Midlands for consistently throwing one of the best club nights in the UK. This has lead to creating a dedicated Firefly following who know and trust the brand and the quality of dance music that it represents .
October 3rd will see the firefly circus roll back into town with Format B (live) and the return of the clubnights prodical son Fergie. For those of you who havnt had the chance to go to the Garvey in Nottingham and see the wonder that is firefly we strongly urge you to come and get involved!

Format:B are Franziskus and Jakob. Jakob is a Berliner, from Kreuzberg to be exact. As all good parents do, his wanted him to play an instrument. After years of successfully dodging music lessons and his parents wishes, he finally at the subtle age of 15 decided that he desperately needed a bass guitar, which then through diligent practice manoeuvred him from hardcore bands to funk and jazz bands. But suddenly, there was a small problem: he liked Techno parties much better than rock concerts. So, as one does, he began buying the odd techno maxi here and there until one day little Jakob thought to himself: Why heck, I can do that too! So off he went and bought himself an overpriced Atari St40 and a cheap synthesizer, only to realize that oops those guys from Detroit really do know what theyre doing and that it wasnt that easy after all. Well, that is basically where Jacobs ambitiously planned out life suddenly took a screeching of the wheels turn in another direction. Franziskus is from Erfurt, a small and rural part of Germanys quite rough and wild East, which didnt stop him from starting piano lessons at the innocent age of 6. His musical interests took him from the usual suspects like Michael Jackson and The Pet Shop Boys through to Hardcore (obviously not on the piano). But then one day, or night to be exact similar to Jakob, all was to suddenly change.. A fortuitous night out at the legendary E-Werk in 1993, made this young mans heartbeat skip from Chopin over to a 4/4 beat where it was to remain, probably forever. Three years later Franziskus took up residency at the infamous Sub ground Lighthouse After hour, resulting in numerous further bookings. The paths of these two young men crossed whilst they were both studying to be sound engineers. Seeing as all the other students in there year were long haired Metal heads it was only a matter of time until their paths crossed. So, after spending a few long Berlin party nights together they decided to see if they could start a project together. And so the story ends or better yet, begins with Format:B

There is no doubt that Fergie has firmly re-established himself as a producer of innovative exciting music that really takes a hold of you. Having dedicated himself to the studio for the past few years, where he totally immersed himself in his passion for music, this has been a true labour of love for Fergie:
”I just wanted to go back and take time to rediscover what the music meant to me; how it made me feel, the buzz, the excitement. To find a sound that would reflect my individuality as a DJ and producer and in some way to recapture all of that in my productions” (Fergie).
Clearly he has found his sound and the results are very evident in the free flow of original productions and remixes being consistently supported by the likes of Sasha, Digweed, Dubfire, Laurent Garnier, Miss Kitten and Slam. His ever growing ‘Excentric Muzik’ label has been hailed by Carl Cox as his “label of 2008”, with Cox going on to license several productions for his forthcoming Space compilation this summer. Underground cuts such as ‘Anon’, ‘To The Core’ and ‘Blackeye-P’ have helped to instill Fergie and Excentric at the forefront of serious peak time electronica. Excentric off-shoot label ‘Rekluse’ (launched at the tail end of last year) has got off to a storming start with first release ‘2nd To None’ by Umek refusing to leave the Beatport techno charts almost half a year after it’s release, peaking at the number 1 spot along the way.
A steady stream of new material and remixes on many other labels of distinction have proven the Fergie sound to be one that is in much demand. ‘Ireland’ and the remix of Namito ‘City Of Gods’ (on Great Stuff), the remix of King Unique’s ‘Hinode’ (which went down so well they asked him back to rework one of their biggest ever tracks, ‘Dirty’) and not forgetting the all conquering remix of Umek’s ‘Gatex’, these have all firmly established Fergie as a proven seal of production quality for many.

Firefly Recordings was created as an offshoot of the clubnight but with the same passion for dance music as the events. The label takes in house, techno, minimal and electro and the best shades in between them all. The most exciting music often comes from where the margins of existing styles meet and then blur. The label has music that we love and believe in and that we know will move a dance floor.
Label Artists include max cooper, thrash jelly, Celtec Twinz, Pollyy, Craig Sylvester, jill bellac, Jamie Evans and Max Hedroom. Now with 5 releases under its belt firefly prepares to release instalment number 6 from Jamies Evans which will be launched exclusively through beatport in October after the 1st firefly of the season!
